Visit to the Mississippi Delta to Speak and Finalize "Chopsticks in the Land of Cotton" Sept. 2008
When some Delta Chinese learned of my work on a book about their grocery stores, a group organized a 16 day visit for me to meet many Chinese in the region who grew up in their family stores to help me better understand their unique historical experiences. This genuine "Southern Hospitality" was frosting on the cake, allowing me more insights and validation of ideas that I had formed from studying oral histories, previous books, and other documents. I came away with a heightened admiration of the achievements of the Delta Chinese in the face of difficult conditions for many years.
